How Do Exodata VMware Cloud Services Operate?

Exodata delivers VMware virtual servers that can replicate the performance and user experience you’re accustomed to with your on-site server infrastructure. Your Virtual Data Center (VDC) is accessible via the public internet or a VPN and can be managed through a web-based portal.

We offer Self-Service or Fully Managed VMware Cloud, featuring public IaaS, hybrid cloud, or entirely private deployment options. You can also enhance your cloud experience with specialized managed services. Every hosted VMware service comes with vCloud Director, free monitoring utilities, advanced firewall capabilities, load balancing, and round-the-clock customer support.

If your organization is already using VMware virtualization, you’re one step closer to transitioning into a cloud-hosted setup.

Resource Allocation

Each virtual machine in the public IaaS configuration is allocated virtual CPUs and RAM, dynamically sourced from a pool of available physical resources. This on-demand scalability allows you to adjust resources as needed without service interruptions, virtually eliminating constraints on resources.

Virtual machine storage is linked to a datastore hosted on our cloud storage platform. Exodata cloud storage offers multiple performance tiers, and your VDC can also connect to specific file or object storage solutions. Storage can be expanded seamlessly as needed.

Software Support and Compatibility

Virtual Data Centers generally host either a Guest Operating System or third-party apps. We can pre-install your chosen guest OS and offer a range of ready-to-use template machines. While you’re not obligated to use our licensing, it’s important to verify that your OS is VMware-compatible. Supported Guest Operating Systems span all major vendors and open-source providers, from Apple and Microsoft to Debian and CentOS.

We provide template VMs that include Windows, Linux, and CentOS, all supported by our Global Service Center. Additionally, Exodata can furnish licenses for various software applications, including:

  • Microsoft 365
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • Windows Remote Desktop Services

Self-Management Tools

Maintain control of your cloud without intermediaries. With vCloud Director and other monitoring tools, you can manage various VDC resources such as:

  • Firewall settings
  • VPN configurations
  • Virtual machine power cycling
  • Adding, altering, or removing virtual computing resources
  • Creating, erasing, or reverting to VM snapshots
  • Adding, relocating, or deleting VMs
  • Creating VM templates accessible via catalog

vCloud API Capabilities

vCloud Director APIs are adaptable frameworks that grant users programmatic control over provisioning and administrative functions. Developers can create applications for in-house virtual resource management that can easily integrate with Exodata’s cloud infrastructure. The API enables both upload and download operations, customization, and VM deployment.

Furthermore, the API supports RESTful application development styles, facilitating communication between API clients and vCloud Director servers over HTTP.

Through the vCloud API, user inputs can lead to innovative cloud management solutions. Use cases from Exodata customers include:

  • Automatically powering virtual machines on or off based on user requirements, thereby saving costs and energy
  • Developing APIs to activate servers for scheduled backups
  • Automatically launching a new server when traffic reaches a predetermined limit
